BE TRUE TO YOUR SCHOOL:
The Beatles far outdistanced everybody else with 11 top twenty records. The Beach Boys were a distant second with five.
Motown was establishing itself as "Hitsville" in our junior year -- The Temptations had their first top twenty record with "The Way You Do the Things You Do" in April of '64.
The Reflections were "one hit wonders" as "(Just Like) Romeo & Juliet" reached #6 at the end of May, but they wouldn't have any more top 40 records.
In February, the Whisky A Go Go opened on the Sunset Strip in L.A. and Johnny Rivers was the house band. The performances were so well received that Lou Adler at Imperial Records decided to record an album, "Johnny Rivers Live at the Whisky A Go Go." The album made #12 on the Billboard chart. A single from the album, a Chuck Berry tune, "Memphis," was number one on July 11th.
The Ronettes came up just short of #1 with "Be My Baby" in October of 1963. Lead singer, Ronnie Spector, later reprised her performance in Eddie Money's "Take Me Home Tonight" ("just like Ronnie sang").
"Sugar Shack" became the #1 record on October 12th of '63 and stayed there for five weeks. It was Billboard's top song of the year.
1963 was the first year of his career that Elvis didn't have a #1 record -- he wouldn't have another until 1969 with "Suspiscious Minds." His best effort of our junior year was "Bossa Nova Baby" from the movie "Fun in Acapulco." It reached #8 in October.
Dusty Springfield was part of the "British Invasion" in 1964. She had two top twenty records with "I Only Want to Be With You" (#12) and "Wishin' and Hopin'" (#6). She had charted earlier in 1962 with her group, The Springfields, and "Silver Threads and Golden Needles." They were a folk/pop trio -- the first British group to crack the US top twenty.
Marvin Gaye had two solo and two duet (with Mary Wells) top twenty records during our junior year (1964). He also had "Can I Get A Witness" peak at #22 in December of '63.
The Temptations had been with Motown for several years and finally had their first hit with "The Way You Do The Things You Do."
Roger Miller had his first hit recording with "Dang Me."

Major Lance had four top twenty junior year hits: The Monkey Time #8; Hey Little Girl #13; Um Um Um Um Um Um #5; The Matador #20. A little known fact -- while touring Great Britain in the 1960's his backup band was Bluesology with pianist Reggie White, later to be known as Elton John.
The Supremes had signed with Motown in 1960 as The Primettes. After four years they had failed to make the top forty except for one record, "When the Lovelight Starts Shining Through His Eyes" (#23 - 1963). Then they released "Where Did Our Love Go" in the summer of 1964 -- it climbed to #1 at the end of our junior year on August 22.
