This was the second season for the show which centered around television writer Rob Petrie's family and office life. Written by Carl Reiner (who also played the part of Petrie's boss, Alan Brady), the show was nearly cancelled after its first season. The 1963 award was the first of 15 Emmys the show would receive in its five seasons.
"The Defenders" was a "socially conscious" legal drama in which the father-and-son team of Lawrence Preston (E.G. Marshall) and Ken Preston (Robert Reed) take on challenging and sometimes controversial law cases. In 1963, "The Defenders" won four of its seven Emmy Awards nominations.

"The Danny Kaye Show" was in its first season in 1963 when it won the Emmy, although its ranking was only 30. Harvey Korman was one of the regulars on the show. "The Making of the President, 1960" was a documentary based on Theodore White's book. It aired on December 29th, 1963.
