ACADEMY AWARDS FOR 1964 AND 1965
My Fair Lady won the Oscar for the best picture of 1964. It was adapted from the Broadway play that had run from 1956 to 1962. Rex Harrison reprised his role as Professor Henry Higgins who takes a challenge to change a Cockney flower girl, Eliza Doolittle (Audrey Hepburn) into a lady, by changing her style of speech. Julie Andrews portrayed Maria, an nun who leaves the convent and finds romance with her employer, Captain Von Trapp (Christopher Plummer), in 1965's best picture, The Sound of Music. The film was based on the 1961 Broadway play that had starred Mary Martin. It depicts how Maria became part of the Von Trapp family and how they escaped the Nazis after they took over Austria.
Rex Harrison won the Oscar for best actor in 1964. He had played Professor Henry Higgins on Broadway. Harrison declined to dub his musical numbers, claiming he never did them the same way twice. Harrison also won the Tony award for My Fair Lady. Julie Andrews was named best actress in 1964 for her role as Mary Poppins, nanny to the Banks children. Perhaps due to having received the award in '64, she was passed over in 1965 for her role in The Sound of Music.
Lee Marvin won the best actor award in 1965 as Kid Shelleen in the western comedy, Cat Ballou. Shelleen was a washed up gunfighter and a drunk who Catherine Ballou (Jane Fonda) hired to help her protect her father's ranch. In Darling, Julie Christie played Diana Scott, a model who is "discovered" by television director Robert Gold (Dirk Bogarde). She becomes famous and a shallow jet setter who participates in wild parties. Christie received the Oscar for best actress in 1965.
