Sam Cooke and Chubby Checker were two of the most prolific artists of the sophomore year, each placing five songs in the top 40.
The Four Seasons were the only artists to have more than one #1 song -- they had three: Sherry, Big Girls Don't Cry, and Walk Like a Man
By our sophomore year, Elvis Presley wasn't really "the king" of rock and roll. 1963 would be the first year he had no #1 records. He still managed to get 4 songs in the top 40, his biggest hit being "Return To Sender" that reached #2.
DO YOU LOVE ME :
The Contours' "Do You Love Me" registered the most weeks in the top 40 during our sophomore year -- 19 weeks. The song enjoyed renewed popularity in 1987 when it was featured in the film, "Dirty Dancing."
Instrumentals experienced great popularity in the early sixties.

Country songs such as "Detroit City" by Bobby Bare and "Devil Woman" by Marty Robbins crossed over into the pop chart, but perhaps the most enduring country sound from our sophomore year was "Ring of Fire" by Johnny Cash.
Another iconic record from our sophomore year was "Danke Schoen." While it only made it to #13 in 1963, it is one of the more recognizable songs of the era, thanks to Wayne Newton's subsequent career as a Las Vegas headliner.
In January of 1963, Paul & Paula (actually Ray Hilderbrand and Jill Jackson) had a #1 record with "Hey Paula." Unless you were a big fan (and hopefully there weren't too many of you), you probably didn't realize that the success of "Hey Paula" spawned seven sequels, including "Young Lovers" which actually made it to #6.
He might not look the part of a hit recording artist, and you might not readily recognize him, but Alan Sherman had a #2 record in August of 1963 -- the comedy recording, "Hello Muddah, Hello Fadduh."
"Silver Threads and Golden Needles" made the top twenty (barely) for The Springfields in the fall of 1962. Dusty would go on to have a very succesful single career .
"Can't Get Used To Losing You' was a #2 record for Andy Williams -- his best since 1957 when "Butterfly" was #1.
