E. G. Marshall received the Emmy for best Actor for his role on "The Defenders"
The Best Actress award went to Shirley Booth for her role on "Hazel."
As Deputy Barney Fife, Don Knotts received the award for best supporting actor.
Glenda Farrell received the Emmy for best supporting actress for her role as Martha Morrison in the "A Cardinal Act of Mercy" episode of "Ben Casey."


The 1963 Emmy Awards were presented on May 26th, televised by NBC and hosted by Annette Funicello and Don Knotts. It was the fifteenth year for the awards. "The Defenders" had the most major wins. NBC's , "The Tunnel," became the first documentary to win the Emmy for Program of the Year. CBS led the three networks with 9 major wins.

BEST DRAMA -- The Defenders
This was the second season for the show which centered around television writer Rob Petrie's family and office life. Written by Carl Reiner (who also played the part of Petrie's boss, Alan Brady), the show was nearly cancelled after its first season. The 1963 award was the first of 15 Emmys the show would receive in its five seasons.
"The Defenders" was a "socially conscious" legal drama in which the father-and-son team of Lawrence Preston (E.G. Marshall) and Ken Preston (Robert Reed) take on challenging and sometimes controversial law cases. In 1963, "The Defenders" won four of its seven Emmy Awards nominations.

BEST VARIETY SHOW BEST PROGRAM
"The Andy Williams Show" debuted in September and won the Emmy for best variety show. On December 20th, the Osmond Brothers appeared for the first time. "The Tunnel" was an NBC documentary about the efforts of university students in West Germany to dig a tunnel under the Berlin Wall to help people to escape communist East Germany. It received the Emmy for best program in 1963.
