1956:

This is a very representative group for the inaugural year of rock and roll. The Platters were a vocal group that transitioned popular music from the traditional vocal sounds of groups such as The Ink Spots to the popular doo wop of the 1950's. Bill Haley and the Comets are given credit by many for coining the term "rock and roll." Pat Boone brought the sound of early rockers to a broader white audience. And Little Richard epitomized the early image of rock and roll.
