Elvis Presley's "All Shook Up" was an impressive record. It was Elvis's seventh song to top the chart and his tenth million seller. It spent more weeks at #1 (9) than any other Elvis release. But the origin of the song is somewhat unclear. Elvis wanted to record another song by Otis Blackwell who had given him his biggest hit, "Don't Be Cruel." According to some reports, Blackwell had already written the song when contacted by the Presley people. He reportedly got the idea for the title from David Hill who first recorded it for Aladdin Records. Other accounts have Elvis suggesting the title to Blackwell and then adjusting some of the lyrics after he first heard it. Another account has an owner of Shalimar Music, Al Stanton, suggesting the title after shaking up a bottle of Pepsi. Whatever the true circumstance, Presley did get co-writer credit on the record (a common practice pursued by Presley manager Colonel Tom Parker who required his boy to get writing credit in exchange for doing the record). "All Shook Up" was recorded in Los Angeles in January with his usual band: Scotty Moore, Bill Black, and D.J. Fontana, along with vocal accompaniment by The Jordainaires. The record debuted on the Billboard chart in April and quickly climbed to #1. It was Elvis's first #1 in the UK. At the end of 1957 it was listed as #1 for the year by Billboard (making Elvis the only artist to place back-to-back records at #1). On November 8,1977, Suzi Quatro performed "All Shook Up" when appearing as Leather Tuscadero on "Happy Days."
