1959:

"Teen Idols" have probably always been around in one form or another. Frank Sinatra got his start in the 1940's as the object of adoration for the "bobbysoxers." In 1959 the phenomeon attached itself to rock and roll in a big way. The year's featured artists reflect that. Paul Anka and Bobby Darin were probably two of the most talented of the "Teen Idols" with songwriting credits to go with their performing talent and good looks. Connie Francis was the anomaly among rock stars -- the rare female vocalist. She was often marketed as a female "teen idol," but was a legitimate singing talent. Lloyd Price was the most successful recording artist of 1959. Jackie Wilson was perhaps the best at live performances, being known as "Mr. Excitement." If you had a disk of songs from these artists just from 1959, you'd have a pretty good collection.
