In the 1950's Cashbox Magazine was the main competitor with Billboard for the music trade. In 1956 the rankings expanded to a top 50 and then to a top 75 in 1957 and became a top 100 in 1958. Publicaton of the magazine ended in 1996.
Frankie Avalon was another of the Philadelphians that American Bandstand propelled to success. He was first noticed and recorded as a trumpet player. "Venus" was his first number one song and #3 for Cashbox in 1959.
With "Lonely Boy" at #4 and "Put Your Head On My Shoulder" at #8 Paul Anka had two songs in the Cashbox Top 10 for 1959.
The Drifters reorganized in 1959 and had a top ten record with "There Goes My Baby." I was the #5 song for Cashbox in 1959.
