When The Everly Brothers contract with Cadence expired in 1960, there was a huge bidding war. Warner Brothers payed a million dollars for the duo and there was immense pressure for them to produce a hit. "Cathy's Clown" was that hit. Without the talented writing team of Felice and Boudleaux Bryant, Don & Phil wrote this one themselves. Inspired by a story their dad used to tell them about being rejected as a teenager, the song debuted in April and hit the top spot on May 23rd where it would remain for 5 weeks. It would be the only #1 song the Brothers would produce for Warner Brothers, but they would have four other top ten hits for the label. While the British Invasion would push them off the charts, they would continue a successful concert tour career through the rest of the decade. In 1973 Don walked off stage at a concert and there was a ten year separation until 1983 when they returned to the stage in London for a reunion concert.
