"Stay" by Maurice Williams & The Zodiacs
"Won't you press your sweet lips to mine; Won't you say you love me all of the time?"

"Stay" debuted in October and made the number one spot on November 21. But it had been a struggle to ever get the song distributed. Williams was no stranger to the jungle of record producing. In 1957 he was part of The Gladiolas and Williams had written a song called "Little Darlin'" which they recorded. But a white group, The Diamonds copied the song and The Gladiolas' version got little play. When they left the Excello label, the label kept the "Gladiolas" name. Thus, a new name was necessitated, The Zodiacs. Producers Phil Gernhard and Johnny McCullough took "Stay" to New York, but record companies passed; until they played it for Herald Records. The label agreed to distribute the record, but needed two adjustments. First of all, it had to be re-recorded at a higher level. Secondly, an original line "Let's have another smoke" had to be changed -- it was thought radio stations would balk at playing a song that encouraged cigarette smoking. The changes were made and the song became the shortest number one record ever, one minute and 37 seconds. It was the groups only hit. But it's very well known as it was also a #16 song for The Four Seasons and a #20 song for Jackson Browne. It would also be featured in the movie, "Dirty Dancing.

LYRICS:

(Stay)
A-a-a-a-ah, just a little bit longer
(Please)
Please, please, please, please
Tell me you're going to

Now, how your daddy don't mind
And your mommy don't mind
If we have another dance
Yeah, just one more
One more time

Oh, won't you stay
Just a little bit longer
Please let me hear
You say that you will
Say you will

Won't you press your sweet lips
To mine
Won't you say you love me
All of the time

(Stay)
Just a little bit longer
(Please)
Please, please, please, please
Tell me you're going to

Come on, come on, come on and ... yey-yey-yeh
Come on, come on, come on and stay-yey-yey-yeh
Come on, come on, come on and stay, woops!
Come on, come on, come on...
