"Walk Don't Run" by The Ventures
"the band that launched a thousand bands"

"Walk Don't Run" first hit the charts in the summer of 1960 and made it to the #2 position in September. In an age of popular instrumentals, it was one of the best. The Ventures were a group formed in Seattle in the late1950's. Bob Bogle and Don Wilson were brick layers who put together a band and modified a Chet Atkins rendition of "Walk Don't Run" into a simpler, easier to handle composition. No record company was interested, so the group pressed and promoted their own record. When it started getting extensive local air play, Dolton Records picked it up and it climbed the chart. The Ventures would have a few more top 40 hits, but they would be significantly successful with their albums through the 1960's and into the 1970's. In addition, they were the inspiration to many high school guys to "get a band together."
