"Do You Love Me" by The Contours
"Can you imagine dancing like this on the main floor, home of the family fox trot?"
-- Billy Kostecki to "Baby'Houseman in "Dirty Dancing"

Above: Penny (Cynthia Rhodes) and Johnny (Patrick Swayze) dance to "Do You Love Me" in the 1987 movie, "Dirty Dancing."

Motown records was founded by Berry Gordy in 1959 and by 1962 had experienced significant chart success with acts such as Smokey Robinson, The Miracles, and Mary Wells, and The Marvelettes. More success was on the horizon with groups such as The Temptations, Four Tops and The Supremes. The Temptations' success might have come earlier, but in 1962 Gordy had written a song he intended they record, but they were not available so he gave the song to The Contours. "Do You Love Me" was released in June of 1962 and would reach #3 in October. It would be the only top 40 recording by The Contours, but it would accomplish it twice. In 1987, it was featured in the film, "Dirty Dancing" and re-issued as a single from an album, "More Dirty Dancing," eventually peaking at #11. In the movie, it was the song that literally introduced us to "dirty dancing" as Billy (Neal Jones) and Baby (Jennifer Grey)carry the watermelons through the door and The Contours come blasting out and the camera pans through the couples on the dance floor.

LYRICS:

You broke my heart
'Cause I couldn't dance
You didn't even want me around
And now I'm back
To let you know
I can really shake 'em down

Do you love me?
(I can really move)
Do you love me?
(I'm in the groove)
Ah, do you love?
(Do you love me)
Now that I can dance
(Dance)

Watch me now, oh
(Work, work)
Ah, work it all baby
(Work, work)
Well, you're drivin' me crazy
(Work, work)
With a little bit of soul now
(Work)

I can mash-potatoe
(I can mash-potatoe)
And I can do the twist
(I can do the twist)
Now tell me baby
(Tell me baby)
Mmm, do you like it like this
(Do you like it like this)
Tell me
(Tell me)
Tell me

Do you love me?
(Do you love me)
Now, do you love me?
(Do you love me)
Now, do you love me?
(Do you love me)
Now that I can dance
(Dance)
Dance

Watch me now, oh
(Work, work)
Ah, shake it up, shake it
(Work, work)
Ah, shake 'em, shake 'em down
(Work, work)
Ah, little bit of soul now
(Work)

(Work, work)
Ah, shake it, shake it baby
(Work, work)
Ah, you're driving me crazy
(Work, work)
Ah, don't get lazy
(Work)

I can mash-potatoe
(I can mash-potatoe)
And I can do the twist
(I can do the twist)
Well now tell me baby
(Tell me baby)
Mmm, do you like it like this
(Do you like it like this)
Tell me
(Tell me)
Tell me

Do you love me?
(Do you love me?)
Now, do you love me?
(Do you love me?)
Now, do you love me?
(Do you love me?)
(Now, now, now)

(Work, work)
Ah, I'm working hard baby
(Work, work)
Well, you're driving me crazy
(Work, work)
And don't you get lazy
(Work)

(Work, work)
Ah, hey hey baby
(Work, work)
Well, you're driving me crazy
(Work, work)
And don't you get lazy
(Work)
