"I'm Leaving It Up To You" --
by Dale & Grace
"We went back to our rooms and didn't find out about it (Kennedy assasination) until three hours later."
-- Sam Montel
In 1956 Don Harris and Dewey Terry recorded "I'm Leaving It Up To You." Like all their other efforts at the time, it met with little commercial success. In 1963 Louisiana record producer Sam Montel was looking for someone to record the Don & Dewey song when he found Dale Houston performing mostly country songs at honky tonks around Ferriday. Grace Broussard was singing with her brother's band in Prairieville. Montel put the two together and recorded "I'm Leaving It Up To You." The recording session wasn't real efficient as Dale didn't know the song that well (they sang the second verse as just a repeat of the first), and the string section played in the wrong key. But Montel liked the result and issued the record on his regional label "Michele" and sent copies to regional disc jockeys. When the song was picked as a #1 new release by jockeys in Houston, the song was moved to the Montel label for national distribution. On November 23 the duo was on tour with a Dick Clark Caravan of Stars when the record was named #1 by Billboard. That morning, the singers watched President Kennedy drive by their hotel and soon afterward there was little joy for the great musical accomplishment. Dale & Grace had one other top forty record, "Stop and Think It Over" (#8) in 1964. Donnie & Marie Osmond had a #4 version in 1974.

LYRICS:

I'm leavin' it all up to you oh oh
You decide what you're gonna do
Now do you want my love?
Or are we through?

That's why I'm leaving it up to you oh oh
You decide what you're gonna do
Now do you want my love?
Or are we through?

My heart in my hand
I, I don't understand
Baby, what, what have I done wrong?
I worship, I worship the ground that you walk on

That's why I'm leavin' it up to you oh oh
You decide what you're gonna do
Now do you want my love?
Or are we through?
