While 1963 is often portrayed as a wasteland of rock and roll, these featured artists put the lie to that claim. While Lesley Gore fits the stereotype of bubblegum pop the year is known for, she would also record a feminist anthem. Folk music thrived in 1963 and Peter, Paul & Mary popularized the music of Bob Dylan, looking to a future when the lyrics of rock and roll would become more significant. The Miracles were the vanguard of the Motown sound that would maintain an American presence on the charts as the British invasion unfolded. And for rock and roll at its best, The Beach Boys and Jan & Dean produced the fun sounds the early sixties were known for, but also harkened to the future as both groups became masters of the recording studio.
