Brian Epstein, The Beatles' manager, managed two other bands from Liverpool that each had two entries in the 1964 Billboard year chart. Gerry Marsden (Gerry & The Pacemakers) and Billy J. Kramer (& The Dakotas) both were their group's lead singer and while their sound was considered part of the Merseybeat, their records were somewhat tamer than The Beatles.
According to Billboard, "Hello Dolly" was the third most popular record of 1964. Jazz trumpeter Louis Armstrong has the distinction of being the one to knock The Beatles out of the #1 position when "Hello Dolly" ascended to the top of the Billboard chart after The Beatles had occupied it for fourteen consecutive weeks. The 63-year-old Armstrong hadn't had a top ten record for eight years. "Hello Dolly." It's only one of two songs from a Broadway musical to reach #1 during the rock era of music.

The Dave Clark Five had the second most records listed in the year end top 100 for 1964. None of their records reached #1, "Because" came closest at #3. Many assume that Dave Clark was the lead singer, but he was actually the drummer. Mike Smith was the lead vocalist. The group was elected to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008.

Dionne Warwick was an American artist who survived the British Invasion. Her first chart record came in 1962 with "Don't Make Me Over" (#21) and in 1964 she had a top ten hits with "Anyone Who Had a Heart" (#8) and "Walk On By" (#6), all written by Burt Bacharach. She would continue to successfully record into the 1980's.
With two top ten records in 1964, The Shangri-Las were one of the continuing line of girl groups. But their records were different, being described as teenage melodramas. Their first release, "Remember (Walkin' In the Sand)" reached #5, and their second has become a rock and roll classic and made it to #1 -- "Leader of the Pack."
Dean Martin was another unlikely American artist to stand up to the British Invasion, but he placed two records in Billboards top 100. Martin's teenage son, Ricci, was obsessed with The Beatles. Dean boasted to his son that "I'm gonna knock your pallies off the charts." He did just that on August 15th when he replaced "A Hard Day's Night" as #1. "Everybody Loves Somebody" was Martin's second #1, the first coming in 1956 with "Memories are Made of This."
Barry Gordy's Motown was one of the strongest American sounds to resist the British Invasion. Mary Wells had been making hit records since 1962 and would have her biggest hit in 1964 with "My Guy," a song written and produced by Smokey Robinson.
