While Steve Carmer had been named to the Class C1 All-State team as a junior, with the move to Class B, even helping his team to a State Championship could earn Carmer no more than Second Team status in 1988. Perhaps with the presence of Dan Bartek as part of the inside game for Wahoo, Carmer's individual statistics were not as impressive. Also, the Class B field of teams had been very competitive all year and Carmer didn't have a statistically impressive state tournament, although he did score the winning basket. Over the next decade, Wahoo players would not be ignored as Wahoo would place at least one player on the first team each of the next eight years; a total of 16 1st & 2nd Team All State selections between 1988 and 1998.
For the Class B selections, it should be noted that there was only one underclassman in the top ten players, Kelly Hendricks of Lincoln Pius X who was a junior. Also noteworthy is Class C1 where two players from Atkinson West-Holt, Chris Peacock and Bruce Chubick were accorded First Team recognition and both would return the next year. It would appear that Atkinson West-Holt had the inside track on a "Back-to-Back" State Championship. However, they would lose in their District in 1989 and not get a chance to defend their title. |
