Lessons Learned -- shooting the three

Coach Anderson was somewhat perplexed by the Warriors’ lack of production from the new 3-point goal. He maintained that they had the players that could make the shots, but they just hadn’t been taking them. Some suggested it might have been because in many cases it had been too easy to get the ball to Steve Carmer or Dan Bartek on the inside. But having scored no 3 pointers in the loss to Syracuse, it became a new point of emphasis. And the Wahoo guards responded. Through the Syracuse game (12 games), the team had connected on 26 three point shots. In the final three weeks of the season (6 games) they would pour in 28 treys. But whether it was the three pointer or not, Anderson wanted more production from the guards. Kevin Jeppson got them off on the right foot when the Warriors returned to the court against Ashland on February 5th. The senior guard netted 18 points in the first half, including one three pointer. Steve Malousek and reserve Rob Brigham also contributed threes. Then on Saturday night against the Bergan Knights (the team that had eliminated the Warriors from the State Tournament the year before) Wahoo rained down threes, making 8 of 17 attempts. Jeppson went 5 - 10 and Shawn Liliedahl came off the bench to go 3 - 4. Against Valley the next week Wahoo went 6 - 12. Against Aquinas they were 3 - 6. And the pace finally slowed in the Schuyler game when they were 1 - 6. But the low number of attempts was at least partially due to the fact that Wahoo was shooting so many layups. It was reported that there was a period of three minutes when Schuyler couldn’t even get the ball into their half court. Against North Bend in the final game of the regular season, the boys from Wahoo definitely showed they were not afraid to fire up the three -- they went 5 for 17.
