District -- Ashland ... again

Wahoo’s 1989 district would be a different experience from 1988 in that the Warriors would have to travel -- to Bellevue West for their tournament games rather than staying in town to play at Wahoo Neumann as they had the previous year. In 1989, the other coaches weren’t about to give the defending State Champion any advantages. Also, in 1989, the first round games were not played on the top seed’s home floor. So, on Saturday afternoon, February 25th, Wahoo journeyed to Bellevue to begin their quest for another District title.

When reporting their experience in the 1989 B-3 District Tournament, Wahoo might have sounded a bit like Forest Gump when they said, “In the opening round we played Ashland, again. And we beat them, again.” 1989 was not a good year to be the weakest team in the Capitol Conference and in the same district with Wahoo. But Ashland was like any other team in the first round of districts -- hope springs eternal. And the Bluejays had a plan to execute a delay game that just might give them a chance. The hope was short-lived. Ashland Coach, Larry Rathe commented, “We kind of wanted to stall, but the first shot we took was a three-pointer.” Still, Ashland hung with Wahoo for half of the first quarter, but then the Warriors went on a 10 point spree in the next three minutes and never looked back. Wahoo couldn’t quite reach the century mark, but prevailed by 50 points, 96 - 46. Jason Glock got his third thirty plus game of the year. His 30 was joined by four other team mates in double figures: Troy Glock, 16, Randy Hoffman 12, Steve Volin, 10, and Bernie Inbody 16. Inbody’s 16 included 4 - 6 three pointers. Coach Anderson summed up Ashland’s dilemma: “We have too many guns for them.”
