Wahoo escaped the first round of the state tournament with a 65 - 49 win over Sidney. While the game started in familiar fashion with the Warriors jumping out to a 13 - 3 lead, the rest of the contest left Warrior fans shaking their heads. The Red Raiders narrowed the margin to 15 - 12 at the end of the first quarter and was within seven at half time. With 5:25 to go in the third quarter, Sidney knotted the score at 30. But Wahoo put together a run to retake the lead and held a 50 - 37 advantage with one quarter to go. Still, the Warriors couldn’t shake the underdog Raiders who were still within 11 with 2:23 remaining in the game. However, Wahoo kept its poise and behind a combined 10 for 10 freethrows from Joel Weyand and Mike Hancock in the last minute and a half, the Warriors survived and moved on to the semifinals. Hancock scored 23 for Wahoo, while Weyand chipped in 15 and Travis Toline 13. Sidney’s Coach Mike Buckles was proud of his team’s effort: “Everybody in the state coming in didn’t think we had a chance. It’s a credit to our kids to overcome adversity and to come out and play the way we did.”
