The lesson of the Fairbury game of 1995 had been to not overlook opponents. In setting their eyes on a state title, the 1996 Warriors had perhaps failed to learn that lesson and viewed their season as an inexorable march to a state title. But three early season losses had refocused the team’s attention. The victory over Mount Michael, a 6-3 record, and a three-game winning streak had restored the team’s confidence. There was little talk about a “mission” at that point. These Warriors had been sobered by their experience on the losing side of games. The 1996 Warriors had learned to take things “one game at a time” and they would do so. And the victories would add up one at a time. Most of the remaining games would be Capitol Conference foes – Wahoo was undefeated against conference competition for the past seven seasons. Everything seemed to point to a team back on track to fulfill its mission -- As long as they remembered the lesson. |
