THE YEAR
TOGETHER
introduction ... shorthanded ... a lot of heart ... expectations

The Schuyler win gave Wahoo the desired momentum going into district play.  Three early season losses had dropped the Warriors in the rankings to as low as sixth but winning the next fourteen games had allowed the Warriors to climb back up.  A St. Paul loss to GICC on a last second three by C.J. Cowgill opened the door and Wahoo began districts as the number one team.  For the second year, Wahoo’s district play was in the sub-district format of four teams followed by a district final with the winner of another sub-district.  Ashland, Gretna, and Valley were assigned to the C1-4 subdistrict.  Wahoo was matched with Valley in the first round.  Wahoo was looking at playing Valley for a second time and possibly Ashland for a third time.  Another rematch loomed as Elkhorn Mount Michael was favored to win the other subdistrict.  Valley had played the Warriors close for a half and Ashland had taken Wahoo to the final seconds of the game before the Warriors prevailed.  Some doubters might have thought this was a perfect recipe for the Warriors to disappoint. But Coach Watton was optimistic: “If you look at films from those earlier games to how we are playing now, you can really tell the difference.  The extra effort is there now.”
