Although Wahoo was not not in the 1997 State Tournament, several of their opponents were. Syracuse made it to the C1 semifinals, defeating Kimball 70-58 in the first round, but then losing to St. Paul 42-49. David City Aquinas won the title with a 53-41 victory over St. Paul. Schuyler made the Class B tournament, losing in the first round to Gering, 56-68. Beatrice made it to the semifinal, defeating Ralston 52-49, then losing to Gering 56-70. Wahoo Neumann reached the C2 finals, losing to Tecumseh 4l1-50. Mount Michael did not make the tournament, losing to Aquinas in the district final. Raymond Central lost to Milford in their subdistrict final. It was Aquinas' first state basketball championship. Ironically, the next Aquinas championship would come in 2006 with Mark Watton as the Monarch's coach, while Aquinas coach Kevin Scheef would become the Warriors' coach and go on to win multiple championships. |
