District Tournament vs. Wahoo Neumann

2/26/09 At Waverly
Wahoo 44 Sub-District Finals
Bishop Neumann 48

The Wahoo Warriors were defeated by the Bishop Neumann Cavaliers 48-44 in the Sub-District Final at Waverly on Thursday night.

The Warriors jumped out to a 13-2 lead in the first quarter. Three point goals from Tyler Brunsting, Matt Myers, and Layne Moore in addition to baskets from Myers and Taylor Murren got Wahoo off to the hot start. Wahoo led 15-10 after one quarter.

The second quarter was a struggle offensively for the Warriors. A trey from Layne Moore would be the only score for Wahoo. Neumann went to halftime up 22-18.

The dry spell offensively continued for Wahoo in the third quarter. A Taylor Murren bucket with 2:43 left broke a long drought, in which the Warriors scored just 3 points in 15 minutes of action. Murren's bucket cut the Cavalier lead to 28-20. Following a Neumann free throw, Murren nailed a 3 to make it 29-23. On the next possession, Jared Moline makes a steal and lay up to make it 29-25 heading into the fourth quarter.

A Layne Moore trey made the score 29-28 early in the fourth quarter. Neumann extended the lead back to 6 at 34-28 following three Travis Ahrens free throws with 4:48 left. Taylor Murren countered with a 3 to cut the lead to 34-31. Two Jared Moline free throws moments later made it 34-33 with 3:50 left. A Brandon Chapek basket for Neumann and two free throws from the Warriors' Sean Lindgren make it 36-35. Bret Pospisil nailed a three point shot for the Cavaliers with 2:50 left to make it 39-35. The Warriors then missed on a short jumper, and Dylan McGill's driving lay up and free throw made the Cavalier lead 42-35. A Layne Moore trey with 1:50 left cut the lead to 43-41, but Neumann was able to convert on four consecutive free throws to ice the game and win 48-44.

"I am really proud of our kids' efforts. We competed hard tonight. We just had too big of a scoring drought in the middle two quarters. Still, we gave ourselves a chance at the end. Pospisil's trey and McGill's lay up were just too much to overcome. We were down 1 and within about 15 seconds we were down 7." Said Coach Kevin Scheef

"Our kids deserve a lot of credit for turning their season around. We were not a very good team early in the year. When we were 2-5, it would have been easy to pack it in and not care, but our kids were determined not to let that happen, and I think from the Syracuse game on, we were a pretty good team." Said Coach Kevin Scheef.

Wahoo ends it's season at 12-10. Neumann improves to 14-7 and will face North Bend in the District Final on Monday at Midland Lutheran College.
