Wahoo 46
Norfolk Catholic 52
The Wahoo Warriors were defeated by the Norfolk Catholic Knights 52-46 on Friday night.
It was a rough start for the Warriors offensively. Wahoo managed just 4 first quarter points. The Warriors were just 2-10 shooting in the first quarter with 6 turnovers against Catholic's tough man to man defense.
The Knights stretched their lead to 17-6 midway through the second quarter before the Warriors found life. Six consecutive points from Senior Taylor Murren cut the Knight lead to 17-12 with two minutes to play. The half ended with the Knights up 20-12.
Norfolk Catholic scored the first 11 points of the third quarter to extend their lead to 31-12. The Warriors would then begin to chip away at the lead as they scored 10 of the next 12 points. Consecutive baskets from Murren, a basket from Tyler Brunsting, a free throw from Matt Myers, and a Layne Moore basket cut the lead to 33-22. The third quarter would end with the Knights ahead 39-28.
Catholic still led 44-31 early in the fourth quarter, when Murren hit two free throws, and converted a 3 point play to cut the lead to 44-36. A Tyler Brunsting trey cut the lead to 5 at 46-41 with 1:40 left. Wahoo would get as close as 4 with 15 seconds left after a Greg Milliken basket. Following a steal, Wahoo missed two treys that would have cut the lead to 1 in the final seconds. The Knights added 2 free throws with 1 second left to account for the 52-46 victory.
"I thought our kids showed a lot of heart in battling back from such a big deficit. Our effort in the second half was excellent. We just got in too big of a hole against a very good team. Our inability to rebound effectively was a big key to the game as well." Said Coach Kevin Scheef.
Norfolk Catholic outrebounded Wahoo 33-21. The Knights also shot 33 free throws compared to just 10 for Wahoo.
Taylor Murren led the Warrios with 20 points. Matt Myers added 9 points and 5 assists. Tyler Brunsting contributed 8 points. Layne Moore added 6 points and 7 rebounds. Greg Milliken contributed 5 steals on the defensive end.
Wahoo drops to 6-6, as their 4 game winning streak comes to an end. Norfolk Catholic improves to 12-2. The Warriors will host Raymond Central on Monday in the first round of the Capitol Conference Tournament.
