1/26/09 At Wahoo
Wahoo 77
Raymond Central 50

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Raymond Central Mustangs 77-50 on Monday night in the first round of the Capitol Conference Tournament.

The game was close early. Raymond Central led 12-11 after one quarter. Wahoo was still down 15-14, when Matt Myers hit a trey to go up 17-15. Wahoo put on a press and Central turned it over on their next 6 possessions. A Greg Milliken 3 point play and two free throws from Myers extended the Warrior lead to 22-15. Wahoo went to halftime up 31-23.

In the third quarter, Central rallied to close the game up. Following a Jared Brenner basket, the Mustangs trailed just 42-41. The Warriors responded with an 8-0 run. A Layne Moore trey, a Sean Lindgren basket, and a free throw and bucket from Taylor Murren put Wahoo up 50-41. The third quarter ended with Wahoo up 52-44.

The fourth quarter was all Warriors. A Matt Myers lay up followed by a Layne Moore basket, and two free throws by Murren put the Warriors up 58-44, and the Warriors would go on to the 77-50 victory by outscoring the Mustangs 25-6 in the fourth quarter.

Taylor Murren led the Warriors with 24 points on 7-15 shooting from the field and 8-10 from the line. Layne Moore contributed 17 points on 4-9 shooting from behind the arc, and Moore added a game high 9 boards. Greg Milliken added a career high 13 points and 4 steals. Matt Myers added 10 points and 5 boards.

Wahoo forced 28 Mustang turnovers compared to 15 turnovers for the Warriors.

"The game was closer than the final score indicates. Central played us much tougher this time than they did six days ago. I thought we were a little flat in the early going, but I was proud that our kids did not get rattled. They just kept playing and eventually were able to get things going. Greg Milliken really played well off the bench for us tonight, as did Sean Lindgren. Layne Moore really shot it well from behind the 3 point line, which is very important for us. Taylor Murren played very well for us again." Said Coach Kevin Scheef.

The Warriors advance to the Semi-Finals of the Conference Tournament where they will face Bennington at D.C. West on Thursday night at 6:00. Wahoo improves to 7-6, while Raymond Central falls to 6-8.
