vs. Syracuse

1/9/09 At Wahoo
Wahoo 50
Syracuse 49

The Wahoo Warriors upset the 9th ranked Syracuse Rockets 50-49 at home on Friday night. The Warrior's Layne Moore knocked down a three with 13 seconds left, and the Warriors down 2 at 49-47. Wahoo then survived two missed Syracuse shots in the final 3 seconds, to escape with the win.

Syracuse led after one quarter 10-9, but the Warriors went to the halftime break up 1 at 22-21. Neither team led by more than 4 in the first half as the lead changed hands numerous times.

Jared Moline hit a trey for the Warriors to open the half and push the lead to 4 at 25-21. After Tyler Brunsting's third trey of the game with 3 minutes to play in the third, Wahoo had their biggest lead of the game at 38-29. Back to back baskets from the Rockets' Brett Copley cut the lead to 38-34. A Greg Milliken free throw ended the quarter with Wahoo up 5 at 39-34.

In the fourth quarter, a Taylor Murren steal, basket, and free throw, followed by a Layne Moore jumper, put the Warriors up 43-34 early in the fourth. A Murren baske with 3:55 left had Wahoo up 47-38. The Rockets then went on a 11-0 run, as Wahoo turned the ball over on three consecutive possessions, and then misfired on their next two possessions. A Thomas Volkmer basket gave Syracuse their first lead of the half with 1:20 to play at 48-47. A free throw from Mitch Ross extended the Rocket lead to 49-47 with 30 seconds left. Following a Warrior time-out, Taylor Murren drove and found Moore open on the right wing, who nailed the trey with 13 seconds left to put Wahoo up 50-49. Following a Syracuse time-out, the Rockets missed a 12 foot jumper. A tip-in was off the mark as well, and Tyler Brunsting corralled the final rebound as the buzzer went off.

"This was such a big win for us. Everybody was feeling pretty low after our loss to Fort Calhoun. The season has not went how we hoped it would, but this is a huge shot of confidence for us and hopefully we can use this momentum to get on a roll. I am really proud of the kids' efforts tonight. We had chances to really extend the lead throughout the fourth quarter, but we missed some free throws, and made some poor decisions with the ball. The kids' showed a lot of character in the last minute, and Layne made a huge shot for us." Said Coach Kevin Scheef.

The Warriors were 8-17 from 3 point range (47.1%), while the Rockets were 3-18 from behind the arc (16.7%).

"Syracuse did not shoot the ball very well tonight, but I would like to think that we had a lot to do with that. This was easily our best defensive effort of the season. I thought we really battled on the glass against a very physical team, and I thought Tyler Brunsting's efforts on the boards was tremendous" Added Coach Scheef.

Taylor Murren led the Warriors with 21 points on 8-14 shooting from the field. Tyler Brunsting added 11 points, but more importantly contributed a game high 13 rebounds. Jared Moline added 8 points, and Layne Moore 7. Murren also added 5 steals.

Wahoo improves to 3-5 and hosts Crete on Saturday night. Syracuse drops to 7-2.
