vs. Wahoo Neumann

2/23/12 At Waverly, Sub-Districts Finals

Wahoo 47
Bishop Neumann 53

The Wahoo Warriors were defeated by the Bishop Neumann Cavaliers 53-47 in the Sub-District Final at Waverly.

A Max Cook trey, followed by a steal and lay up tied the game at 14 after one quarter of play.

The game was also tied at the halftime, 21-21. The Cavaliers scored the first two baskets of the second half to open up a 25-21 lead. The lead was 6 for Neumann after three quarters of play at 35-29.

Two Jon Abbott free throws to start the fourth quarter cut the lead to 35-31. A Travis Ahrens trey pushed the lead back to 38-31. Two Casey Brown free throws, followed by a Max Cook trey cut the lead to 38-36, but 12 fourth quarter points from Travis Ahrens proved to be the difference, as the Cavaliers went on to the 53-47 win.

Coach Scheef: “One of our strengths all year, has been the way we have taken care of the ball, and not turned it over, but we had 19 turnovers tonight, including 5 of those where the ball just went through our hands. Travis Ahrens had a tremendous game for Neumann. He hit big shots all night long. In spite of Ahrens’ big night, I thought our troubles were more on the offensive end, than the defensive end. We just could not get in a rhythm offensively, and you have to give Neumann a lot of credit for that. They played excellent defensive, and really kept Max from getting many open looks.”

Max Cook led the Warriors with 13 points and 3 steals. Ben Scheef added 10 points and 5 boards. Casey Brown had 9 points and 4 boards. Brook Stuart added 8 points and 3 assists.

Neumann outrebounded the Warriors 23-17, and shot 55% from the field compared to 40% for the Warriors.

Wahoo falls to 22-3, and now must wait to see if they qualify for a wildcard for the State Tournament.
