Norfolk Catholic    59

The Wahoo Warriors were defeated by the Norfolk Catholic Knights 59-46 on Friday night in Norfolk. The Knights jumped out to a 6-0 lead early in the game. The Warriors clawed back towards the end of the first quarter and free throws from Mitch Shukis and Max Cook tied the game up at 10. A Jordan Bellar trey put the Knights up 13-10 after one quarter. In the second quarter, a Jon Abbott bucket and Max Cook free throw gave the Warriors a 21-20 lead.  A three from Dylan Borer and a Riley Knake bucket put the Knights up 25-21 at halftime.

The Warriors scored the first seven points of the second half on two Jon Abbott free throws, a 3 point play from Ben Scheef, and a putback from Ben Scheef to go up 28-25. The Warriors trailed 35-34 after a Max Cook free throws, but the Knight would go on a 7-0 to end the quarter and put the Knights up 42-34 after three. The Warriors again climbed back into the game. After back to back Max Cook baskets, Wahoo trailed by just 4 at 45-41. A Jordan Bellar trey pushed the lead back to 48-41, and the Warriors would not get closer than 6 the rest of the way.

Coach Scheef: “I thought our effort was very good. We gave ourselves a chance early in the fourth, but we left some points at the free throw line, and they seemed to hit some big shots every time we got close. They are a big, athletic team, that plays good defense and rebounds well, and when they shoot it like that, they are tough to beat.”

Max Cook led the Warriors on 21 point and 6 boards. Jon Abbott had 10 points, 4 boards, and 3 steals. Ben Scheef added 7 points and 8 boards. Casey Brown had 5 boards.

The Warriors fall to 12-2, while Norfolk Catholic improves to 10-3.  The Warriors will next face Syracuse at home on Tuesday night in the first round of the Capitol Conference tournament.
