Columbus Scotus 42

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Columbus Scotus Shamrocks 66-42 on Tuesday night at Wahoo.

The Warriors jumped out to a 14-9 lead after one quarter behind seven first quarter points from Tyler Kavan. The lead grew to eight in the second quarter after back to back buckets from Ben Scheef. A Shamrock trey at the end of the half, cut the lead to 27-22 at halftime.

The Warriors extended to lead throughout the third quarter. Seven third quarter points from Casey Brown and seven from Ben Scheef pushed the Warrior lead to 48-35 after three quarters. A 9-2 Warrior run to start the fourth quarter gave the Warriors a 57-37 lead to break the game wide open. Quinn McGill started the run with a lay up, followed by baskets from Jon Abbott, a McGill lay up and baskets from Tyler Kavan and Casey Brown. The Warriors would outscore the Shamrocks 18-7 in the fourth quarter to make the final 66-42.

Coach Scheef: “We were a little sluggish in the first half. We were not getting after them defensively like we need to, and we missed a lot of point blank shots that could have opened up the lead. I thought we played a really nice second half though, and it was good to see us take control on the game in the third quarter. Casey Brown had another huge night for us offensively, Ben Scheef played well for us, and Tyler Kavan and Quinn McGill just give us great effort and athleticism.”

Casey Brown led the Warriors with 23 points on 3-5 shooting from 3 point range and 6 boards. Ben Scheef had 18 points, 9 boards, 3 assists and 3 steals. Tyler Kavan added 11 points. Quinn McGill contributed 6 points, 9 boards, 3 steals, and 5 assists. Jon Abbott had 5 boards, 4 steals, and 3 assists to go with his 6 points. The Warriors forced 24 Shamrock turnovers, and held Scotus to just 34% shooting from the field.

Wahoo improves to 17-2 and will travel to Grand Island Central Catholic on Thursday to take on the Crusaders. Scotus falls to 8-11.
