The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Bishop Neumann Cavaliers 51-45 in the Sub-District Final on Wednesday night at Columbus High School.
Neumann was up 7-4 in the first quarter, when Brook Stuart hit a trey, was fouled, and converted the free throw for the four point play to put Wahoo up 8-7. On the next possession, Stuart hit another trey to put Whoo up 11-7. The quarter ended with Wahoo up 13-12.
A Quinn McGill lay up put Wahoo up 15-14. A Jake Wilson three point play tied the game up at 18 a minute later. A Jonathan Abbott steal and assist to Jake Scheef put Wahoo up 20-18. The half ended with Neumann up 22-21.
A Ben Scheef lay up gave the Warriors the lead for good at 23-22. The teams would trade baskets throughout the third quarter, with the lead going back and forth between one point and three for Wahoo. The score was Wahoo 33-32 with 2 minutes left in the third, when Ben Scheef hit back to back treys to put Wahoo up 39-32 after three quarters.
A Jake Wilson jumper gave the Warriors their largest lead of the night at 41-32 early in the fourth quarter. The Warriors missed a short jumper on the next possession that would have extended the lead to 11. After a Neumann basket, Quinn McGill took the ball the length of the court for a lay up to make it 43-34. A Neumann trey cut the lead to 43-37. A Jonathan Abbott free throw made it 44-37. Another Neumann trey made it 44-40. Following a Warrior turnover, two Neumann free throws cut the lead to 44-42 with 4:20 left. Neumann missed a lay up with 3:30 left that would have tied the game at 44. Ben Scheef made one free throw with 1:50 left that made it 45-42. A Jonathan Abbott steal with 1:20 left got the ball back for Wahoo. A Ben Scheef lay up with 1:00 left put Wahoo up 47-42. Two Brook Stuart free throws with 13 second left made it 49-42. A Neumann trey with 7 seconds cut the lead to 49-45. Two more Brook Stuart free throws with 6 seconds left provided the final margin, and allowed Wahoo to escape with the 51-45 win.
Brook Stuart led the Warriors with 13 points and 4 assists. Ben Scheef had 11 points and 5 boards. Quinn McGill had 8 points and a game high 13 rebounds. Jonathan Abbott added 7 points and 5 steals. Jake Wilson had 5 points and 4 boards. Jake Scheef added 7 boards.
The Warriors outrebounded the Cavaliers 35-24.
Wahoo improves to 25-0 and moves on to the District Final Monday night to Midland University, where they will face Boys Town. Bishop Neumann falls to 19-7, and still clings to wild card hopes.
