3/14/14 At Pinnacle Bank Arena
Semifinals of Class C1 State Tournament
Wahoo57
Wayne 42

Wahoo advanced to its third consecutive Class C1 Championship game by defeating Wayne 57 - 42 in a semifinal contest held at the Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln. The return to the championship didn’t look likely early on. After a low scoring first quarter that found the teams tied at six, the Blue Devils were able to score six more than the Warriors in the second period for a 20 - 14 lead. At half time, Ben Scheef had half of Wahoo’s points with 7, but the Warrior defense was stingy enough to keep Wayne’s lead in single digits.

After trading baskets in the early going of the second half, Wahoo’s offense finally kicked in with a streak of three pointers, two by Jake Ruzicka, and one each by Gavin Iversen and Jake Scheef. Wahoo had the lead at 30 - 27 and never relinquished it. Iversen and Ruzicka were both a perfect four fo four from the line and the Warriors connected on 17 of 23 freethrows in the final stanza to ward off any chance the Blue Devils had of a comeback.

The Warriors put four players in double figures: Ben Scheef (15), Jake Ruzicka (12), Gavin Iversen (12) and Jake Scheef (10). Wahoo’s aggressive zone defense held Wayne well under its 64 point average.

COACH'S CORNER

“I thought that we were really good defensively the entire game. They can really shoot the ball well from behind the 3-point line so it was important to get out to them,” -- Coach Kevin Scheef (from the Wahoo Newspaper)

“I knew we had the talent, it was just going to come down to playing defense, because we played really good defense last year,” -- Ben Scheef (from the Lincoln Journal Star)
