3/12/15  State Tournament First Round

Wahoo  50

Winnebago    66

The fans had barely gotten comfortable in their seats when it became evident that Wahoo was facing a formidable opponent in the first round of the state tournament. The Indians sprinted to a 12 - 2 lead behind three treys in the first three minutes of the contest by Winnebago's Mathew Wingett. The Indians moved the ball well against the Wahoo 1-3-1 defense and drained the long shots at an alarming rate. When the long shotes didn't fall, Winnebago frequently got second chances as they outrebounded the Warriors 34 - 25.

The Warriors found themselves down 21 - 6 at the end of the first period and although they managed to hang even the rest of the game, the damage was done and Wahoo never got the lead under double digits. Jake Scheef led Wahoo with 19 points in his last game as a Warrior -- no other Wahoo player reached double figures. Winnebago connected on 13 of 24 three point shots.

Winnebago had been the second seed in the C1 Tournament and came in with a 24 - 1 record, their only loss to Class C2 qualifier, Fremont Bergan. The Indians would go on to defeat Grand Island Central Catholic in the semifinal and claim the state championship with a convincing win over Columbus Scotus.

COACH'S CORNER

From the Lincoln Journal / Star: "They're a terrific team and we knew they could shoot it. We tried to pull our 1-3-1 back in to not get overextended and try to get to the shooters. We didn't get to them quick enough but there were a lot of shots they hit with somebody in their face. They're really, really good." -- Coach Kevin Scheef
