The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Boys Town Cowboys 64-50 in the first round of the Class C-1 State Tournament held at the Bob Devaney Sports Center, on a snowy Thursday morning.
Wahoo led 9-5 after two Winston Cook baskets. Boys Town would score the next 11 points, to take a 16-9 lead. A Karson Hesser three point play, followed by a Blake Lacey trey cut the lead to 16-15. Following a Boys Town basket, Blake Lacey hit another trey to tie the game at 18. A Trey Scheef trey gave Wahoo a 21-18 lead. Back to back treys from Winston Cook to end the half, gave Wahoo a 27-22 halftime lead. Blake Lacey hurt his leg with three minutes left in the half, and would be done for the day and season.
A Karson Hesser bucket extended Wahoo’s lead to 31-24. A Thomas Waido bucket, followed by a Trey Scheef three point play, pushed Wahoo’s lead to 36-26. A Thomas Waido bucket made it 40-28. A Winston Cook bucket to end the quarter, put Wahoo up 44-30 after three.
Two Trey Scheef free throws gave Wahoo it’s largest lead at 46-30 to start the fourth. A Winston Cook bucket made it 48-34. Boys Town would then cut into the lead. Boys Town scored to cut the lead to four at 54-50, with 2:15 left. Winston Cook then had a huge bucket on a reverse spin to the basket to stop the run and push the lead to six at 56-50. Three Karson Hesser free throws extended the lead to 59-50, and the Warriors were able to hang on to the 64-50 win.
“I am incredibly proud of our kids. We had so many kids step up for us. Winston came up huge, and Karson Hesser and Trey Scheef had terrific games for us. For us to get this done without our floor general Blake Lacey was huge. Blake broke a bone in his leg, and will have surgery tomorrow. My heart breaks for him to have his high school career end this way.” Said Coach Kevin Scheef.
Winston Cook led the Warriors with 23 points and 10 boards. Trey Scheef added 13 point and 6 assists. Karson Hesser had 12 points and 8 boards. Thomas Waido had 6 assists and 5 boards.
Wahoo improves to 24-3 and will face Auburn in the Semi-Finals tomorrow at Pinnacle Bank. Boys Town ends it’s season at 19-8. |
