The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Yutan Chieftains 71-64 on Monday night in Yutan.
The game was tied early at 10-10. Baskets from Blake Lacey, Thomas Waido, and six points from Winston Cook helped Wahoo take a 21-13 lead after one quarter.
A putback at the end of the second quarter from Gerardo Madrid, sent Wahoo to the locker room with a 39-28 lead.
Midway through the third quarter, a Winston Cook basket gave Wahoo their largest lead of the game at 54-34. The Chieftains scored the next seven points to cut the lead to 54-41. A Winston Cook trey pushed the lead back to 16 at 57-41, and the quarter ended with Wahoo up 57-44.
Yutan continued to chip away at the lead and cut the lead to six at 59-53 with six minutes to play. A Blake Lacey layup, A Winston Cook basket, and a lay up from Karson Hesser extended the lead to 12 at 65-53, and the Warriors held on for the 71-64 win.
“We played well at times. We did a nice job of building the lead to 20, and then we did not finish like we need to. Yutan has a really nice team and hit some deep shots to help them climb back into the game. Winston had a big game offensively again for us. Thomas Waido and Karson Hesser both played well for us also.” Said Coach Kevin Scheef.
Winston Cook led Wahoo with 30 points on 4-6 shooting from behind the arc, and 8-8 from the line to go with 7 boards. Karson Hesser added 12 points on 6-7 shooting from the field to go with 8 boards. Blake Lacey had 11 points and 4 assists. Thomas Waido added 10 points and 4 steals.
Wahoo forced 16 Yutan turnovers while committing just 8.
Wahoo improves to 4-2, while Yutan drops to 5-2.
Wahoo hosts Lincoln Lutheran on Tuesday night.
