The Wahoo Warriors went on the road and defeated the Crete Cardinals 61-55 on Saturday afternoon.
Wahoo started off hot, as they jumped to leads of 14-5, and 17-8 in the first quarter. Trevor Kasischke hit two treys in the quarter, and Triston Keeney, Owen Hancock, and Trey Scheef hit a trey as well. The quarter ended with Wahoo up 19-13.
In the second quarter, Wahoo led 30-22 with two minutes left to play. The Cardinals went on an 8-0 though, to end the half, to tie up the game at 30.
The Cardinals took their first and only lead of the game a minute into the half at 32-31. Trey Scheef’s lay up and two free throws made it 35-32. After a Crete bucket, Trevor Kasischke’s three point play put Wahoo up 38-34. Towards the end of the quarter, a Thomas Waido bucket put Wahoo up 46-38. A Crete trey at the buzzer cut the lead to 46-41 after three.
Crete scored the first four points of the quarter to cut the lead to 46-45. The points were tough to come by for the Warriors early in the fourth. Triston Keeney’s jumper put Wahoo up 50-48 with two minutes left. Two Triston Keeney free throws with 1:10 left put Wahoo up 52-48. Following a Crete free throw, Trey Scheef hit two free throws to make it 54-49 with 50 seconds left. An Owen Hancock free throw put the Warriors up 55-49 with 36 seconds left. A Crete trey with 26 seconds left cut the lead to 55-52. Two more Owen Hancock free throws made it 57-52 with 20 seconds left. Crete hit another trey with 16 seconds left to make it 57-55. A Gerardo Madrid assist to Thomas Waido clinched the game with 10 seconds left to make it 59-55.
“Crete’s length in their 1-3-1 caused us a lot of problems. We had chances to stretch the lead and take control of the game, but were just never able to do so. It was really a grind it out type of game.” Said Coach Kevin Scheef.
Thomas Waido and Trey Scheef led the Warriors with 15 points a piece. Waido also had a team high 8 boards. Triston Keeney added 14 points. Trevor Kasischke added 9 points, 5 boards, and 4 assists.
The Warriors improved to 9-1, while Crete dropped to 5-5. The Warriors will host Platteview on Friday night.
