State Tournament - First Round
Wahoo 50
Mount Michael 76
Mount Michael ended Wahoo’s season with a 76-50 win in the first round of the Class B State Tournament. It was only Wahoo’s third loss of the season, their second to the Knights who defeated the Warriors in the sub-district final in February. One statistic told the story of the game: Mount Michael shot 71.4% (10/14) from the three point line while Wahoo struggled at 21.4% (3/14). Nothing the Warriors could do would have off-set that disparity. Part of the reason for Wahoo’s poor shooting could be attributed to the Knight defense which held the Warriors far below their season average of 69 points. Coach Scheef: “Their defensive pressure gave us a lot of trouble.”
Wahoo did manage to stay in the game early, tied at 17 late in the first quarter, but then the wheels came off and Mount Michael ran off 16 unanswered points. The Warriors were held scoreless in the second period, going 0/11 from the field and committing 7 turnovers. Mount Michael increased its lead in the third quarter, outscoring Wahoo 23 – 1. The Knights led by as much as 28 in the final period as they cruised to victory.
Coach Scheef commented, “Once we kind of got stuck, we just couldn’t get unstuck. They put the pedal on us and it just unraveled from there.”
Trevor Kasischke led the Wahoo effort with 15 points while Trey scheef contributed 11.
