The Wahoo Warriors punched their ticket to State with a 70-55 victory over the Platteview Trojans on Saturday afternoon in Wahoo, in the District Finals.
The Warriors got off to a great start scoring the first 10 points of the game. A Trevor Kasischke trey, followed by two free throws from Trey Scheef, a Trevor Kasischke basket and a Braden Harris trey, put Wahoo up 10-0. The Warriors led 18-11 after one quarter.
The second quarter stayed much the same as Wahoo led 29-23 at the half.
Wahoo scored the first seven points of the third quarter to go up 36-23. A Thomas Waido bucket, five straight points from Trey Scheef, and a Braden Harris free throw, put Wahoo up 36-23. Platteview would answer with seven consecutive points to close the game up at 36-30. Wahoo would still lead 37-31, when back to back treys from Gerardo Madrid and Trevor Kasischke put Wahoo up 43-31. Platteview would again answer, and a 40 foot shot at the buzzer closed the gap to 45-39 after three.
The Warriors led 49-44, when a trey from Gerardo Madrid, and two Trey Scheef free throws gave the Warriors a 54-44 lead. Platteview would again answer and cut the lead to 54-49. A big Trevor Kasischke trey with 4:10 left, put Wahoo up 57-49. Platteview would score the next four points to make 57-53, with 3:45 left. An offensive rebound, putback and free throw from Trey Scheef made it 60-53 with 3:20 left. Platteview would answer again and made it 60-55 with 2:38 left. A three point play from Triston Keeney made it 63-55. A Platteview turnover and Thomas Waido lay up made it 65-55 with 1:00 minute left. The Warriors would add five more free throws to close out the win at 70-55.
“This was a great win for our kids. Always tough to beat a good team three times in a season. Our kids competed really hard today. Platteview kept answering every run we made, but we perservered and found a way to get it done. It was a great team win. Trevor Kasischke was sick for two days, but was really tough today and played a great game.” Said Coach Kevin Scheef.
Trevor Kasischke led the Warriors with 15 points, 7 boards, and 4 steals. Thomas Waido had a double-double with 14 points and 10 boards, to go with 4 assists. Trey Scheef had 14 points on 10-10 shooting from the line. Gerardo Madrid had 11 points on 3-4 shooting from behind the arc. Braden Harris added 8 points and 5 boards. Triston Keeney had 8 points, 5 boards, 5 steals, and 6 assists.
Wahoo out rebounded Platteview 35-21, and were 23-28 (82.1%) from the free throw line.
Wahoo improves to 23-2 and will advance the to the State Tournament. Platteview ends it’s season at 14-11.
