Wahoo entered the 2023 Class C1 State Tournament as the #1 seed for the second consecutive year, and again suffered a defeat at the hands of the #8 seed. This time it was a tourney veteran team, Auburn, that upset the Warriors. Auburn had been in the championship game for the previous three years and had won two of those titles. On paper, it was a tough draw for the Warriors, and it became one on the court as well. Known for their deliberate style of offense and a disciplined defense, Auburn was able to hold the Warriors to their lowest point production of the season.

In a game that was close throughout, the Bulldogs were able to keep ahead most of the game, holding a one point advantage, 8-7 at the end of the first quarter. Wahoo did manage a brief 11-10 lead halfway through the second period, but a buzzer three by Auburn’s Maverick Binder put Auburn ahead for good, 22 – 18.

In the second half, Wahoo cut the lead to two on several occasions but Auburn always seemed to have an answer. The Warriors fought to the end, but Auburn salted the game away from the free throw line, netting 12 of 16 in the fourth quarter. Still, the game came down to the final possession as Wahoo was at the line, trailing only by two. When the first free throw fell short, the second was intentionally missed, but Auburn rebounded and converted a final free throw to produce the 47-44 win.

The Warriors had one of their poorest three point shooting efforts, only converting 3 of 13 (23%) and also struggled from the free throw line, hitting only 11 of 21 (52.4%).

Coaches' Corner:

"They (Auburn) are incredibly disciplined, and they jplay great man to man defense on you. ... They (Wahoo seniors) are a great group, they worked really hard. They are super talented kids. I'm heartbroken for them right now that they didn't get a chance to see this further." -- Coach Scheef
