Wahoo vs Beatrice

On a night celebrating Wahoo’s 12 championship basketball teams of the past and honoring former Wahoo coach, Mick Anderson with the naming of the gymnasium as the “Mick Anderson Gymnasium,” Wahoo eked out a victory over visiting conference opponent Beatrice, 51 – 47. Things didn’t look good for Wahoo as Beatrice took a 32-23 lead into the fourth quarter. The Warriors responded by outscoring the Orangemen 17 – 0 the first 4:30 of the period and then held on for the win.

Wahoo didn’t get off to a very good start as the Orangemen’s Boston Crawford stole the ball and drove for a layup to give Beatrice a 13 – 7 lead with a minute to go in the first period. Kip Brigham converted a drive to the basket off a Jase Kaminski pass to narrow the lead to 4. Cody Hesser was fouled at the buzzer and made 3 of 3 free throws to knot the score at 19.

The third quarter belonged to the Orangemen. Wahoo could only manage 4 points, 2 free throws and an inside bucket by Hesser. Harrison Vetrovsky and Evan Roberts each scored a three for Beatrice as they ran off 8 points to finish the quarter with a 32 – 23 lead.

Griffen Hancock, who got his first start as a Warrior led off the fourth period with a three. Then Hesser took over, scoring 13 of the Warriors’ next 15 points, several times stealing the ball himself and driving for the transition layup. Vertrovsky netted a three at the three-minute mark to halt the Wahoo run at 40 – 35. The Warriors were only able to connect on 3 of 6 free throws inside the last minute, but it was enough to hold off the Orangemen. A Tyson Cerverney three at the buzzer produced the final 51 – 47 score.

Wahoo played a majority of the game with its five starters, Joey Kelly being the only other Warrior to see court time. Kip Brigham kept Wahoo in the game in the first half with 8 points – he totaled 10 for the game. Kaminski would finish with 13, 7 in the fourth period. Hesser led all scorers with 25 points, including 11 of 14 free throws.

Wahoo improved its season record to 16 – 4 while Beatrice dropped to 9 – 9.
