Wahoo travelled to Douglas County West without one of their starters, Eli Shada. The senior center was coming off a team leading 16 points against Platteview and was sidelined with an injury. Sophomore Joey Kelly replaced Shada. The Warriors led the entire game and were able to hold off the persistent Falcons for a 56 – 48 win. Wahoo led by as many as 16 in the third period, but DC West scored the last two points of the quarter and the first six of the final period to close Wahoo’s lead to 42 – 34. That was as close as the Falcons would get.
Wahoo got off to a hot start as Jase Kaminski opened the game with a 3-pointer and Cody Hesser finished the period with a steal and dunk that put Wahoo ahead 18-9. Wahoo was 3 of 4 on three’s for the quarter, two by Kaminski. The Warriors were 7 of 11 on total field goals and recorded 6 assists.
DC West made their first run at the start of the second period, scoring the first 7 points and cutting the Wahoo lead to 20-19. Wahoo responded with a Griffin Hancock three and a Hesser jump shot to put Wahoo ahead 28-22 at the half.
The Falcons opened the second half with a Trey Olson three, closing the lead to 28-25. Wahoo then went on a 14 – 1 run finished by a Kaminski score in transition on an assist from Kip Brigham. Wahoo led 42 – 28 at the end of three after limiting DC West to just six points in the third period.
But DC West wasn’t done. The Falcons scored the first six points in the fourth to close to 42 – 34. The teams traded baskets and Wahoo went into the final minute of the game still ahead by eight. The Falcons were able to score six points in the final minute but were forced to foul. Wahoo went 8 of 12 from the free throw line to seal the win. The last two free throws came from Hesser who was a perfect 9 of 9 for the game.
Class C1 #3 ranked (OWH) DC West’s record dropped to 11-3 while Wahoo improved to 10 – 3. Coach T.J. O’Connor commented, “We still have to keep working and getting better with some fundamental stuff.” Hesser led the Warriors in scoring with 17 points and 8 rebounds. Jase Kaminski was also in double figures with15. Trey Olson led the Falcons with 18 points and Nolan Asher scored 13.
