Wahoo vs Elkhorn

The Hoops For Feek Tournament was a one day, seven game event held at Gretna High School to raise fund for the For Feek Forever foundation. The Warriors won their third straight, defeating Elkhorn 48 – 37. Wahoo was again strong on the defense as it was the fifth time in nine games the Warriors held their opponent to under 40 points. The Antlers were held to 33% shooting from the field.

Brad Feeken was the head boys basketball coach for 21 years at Gretna High School. Feeken passed away in December of 2023 after a two year battle with cancer. The For Feek Forever foundation was established to honor the coach and provide funds for scholarships and grants to the school.

While the Wahoo defense kept Elkhorn at bay, the Warrior offense sputtered. Coach T.J. O’Connor noted, “we just never seemed to get into a rhythm. First time we had seen extensive zone and we were just too passive against it.” The Warriors did find a way to score at opportune times. Jase Kaminski connected on a jump shot with just five seconds remaining in the first half to boost Wahoo’s lead to 19 – 13. With just four seconds remaining at the end of the third period Cody Hesser sank a jumper to keep Wahoo’s lead at 33 – 28.

Wahoo had led the entire first half, but Elkhorn went on a 10-0 run early in the third quarter. A steal by Elkhorn’s Grady Friedrichsen led to a Peter Howard assist and layup by Meyer Wachal that put Elkhorn ahead 23 – 21 with 5:22 to go in the quarter. Wahoo responded with an 8-0 run of their own as Hesser drove the lane for 2 and then Hesser and Kip Brigham hit back-to-back three’s to put Wahoo back firmly in the lead. Coach O’Connor thought his team “handled some adversity well.”

Wahoo’s early success was fueled by Hesser’s 7 first quarter points – he would lead the Warriors in scoring with 21. Landon Glock was also in double figures with 11, including three treys. Howard (11) was the only Elkhorn player to reach double digits. Led by Brigham’s 10 caroms, Wahoo won the rebound battle 37 – 19.
The win boosted Wahoo to a 6 – 3 record. Elkhorn fell to 2-7.
