Wahoo’s offense had been sputtering in the early season, but a little rest over the Christmas break gave the Warriors the boost they needed. The Warriors put up their highest score of the season as they defeated Elkhorn Mount Michael 74-60 in the first round of the Wahoo Holiday Tournament. The third quarter was especially productive for Wahoo as they outscored Mount Michael 26 – 16. The 26 points was the most in a quarter to date this season. Trailing 32 – 34 at the half, Cody Hesser opened the second half with a three-pointer and gave Wahoo its first lead since the first minutes of the game. Landon Glock connected on three treys in the period and Wahoo built a 58-48 lead to start the fourth period.

Jase Kaminski scored the first five points of the final period, hitting a three as the shot clock ran out at the 6:17 mark. A Glock three-pointer with 5:29 remaining gave the Warriors their biggest lead at 66 – 50. Hesser made 4 of 4 free throws down the stretch to preserve the win.

Early in the game, it appeared like Wahoo might extend their two-game losing streak as Mount Michael took a 20-11 lead in the first period. In the quarter, the Knights made 4 out of 6 three-point shots, with junior Conner Sail contributing two of them. The Knights scored the first 8 points of the second period and built a 30-16 lead. Wahoo switched to a 1-31 zone and a full court press and turned things around. The Warriors forced 7 turnovers in the period. Coach T.J. O’Connor commented, “We were a little slow out of the gate against Mount Michael, but really started to shoot it well and get some things going in transition.”

Hesser led Wahoo with 28 points, a career high. The senior was 3 of 4 from three-point range, a perfect 7 of 7 from the free throw line and 6 of 9 on two-point shots. Glock also had a career high in points, scoring 21 for the Warriors, including five three pointers. Kaminski was also in double figures with 16. Sail was high scorer for the Knights with 19 – he also connected on 5 three’s. Noah Stricklett scored 11 and Paxton Theis 10 for Mount Michael. Eli Shada led Wahoo with 9 rebounds. Kip Brigham dished out 6 assists. Wahoo registered 13 steals.

Wahoo picked up their fourth win of the season (4-3) and advanced to the tournament championship game against Seward. Mount Michael dropped to 5-2 and will play host team Bishop Neumann in the consolation game.
