It was a productive night for senior Cody Hesser as he grabbed a career high 15 rebounds, paced the Warriors in scoring with 17 and contributed 4 steals as Wahoo defeated Waverly 60 – 43. The 3-10 Vikings came out looking like they might threaten an upset. Waverly scored the first 5 points of the game, but then Wahoo started bombing in three’s. A 12-0 run, all three pointers, one by Hesser and three by Landon Glock gave the Warriors a 12 – 8 lead at the end of the first quarter. But after that 4 of 9 (44%) start, the Warriors would only score two more the rest of the game and finish 7 of 25 (28%). Still, the cold shooting from beyond the arc didn’t keep Wahoo from stretching its lead each quarter.
Hesser sank 4 of 5 freethrows in the second quarter, giving him 9 points in the first half. The Wahoo lead had increased to 25 – 18. The Vikings were still in striking distance.
But Wahoo sprinted out to an 8 – 0 start to the second half. Kip Brigham stole the ball and went coast to coast at the 3:56 mark to put Wahoo ahead 37 – 22. However, Waverly wouldn’t go away. The Vikings, behind a 10 point quarter by Brady Schieffer pulled Waverly to within ten at the end of three quarters.
The Warriors started strong in the fourth quarter outscoring the Vikings 9 – 2 Joey Kelly sank a three with 5:27 mark and Brigham again went coastal to put Wahoo ahead 53 – 36 with 4:19 to go. Jase Kaminski gave Wahoo a 20 point lead with 2:12 remaining. A Waverly 3-pointer by Brockston Tepley ended the game at 60 – 43.
Joining Hesser in double figures were Glock with 15 and Brigham with 13. Schieffert had 15 for Waverly and Tepley scored 11. Wahoo started the season 3-3, but have now won nine straight.
