* = RECORD RANKING WAS NOT IN THE TOP TWENTY OF THE TOP 100 BILLBOARD RANKING

Click on the appropriate button above to view an historical acccount of the record labels for the year, a chart ranking the popularity of the labels in the Billboard top twenty for the year, or a list of the labels that had records in the top twenty for the year.
Dion was still with the Belmonts and they had their biggest hit for Laurie records with "A Teenager in Love."
The Skyliners were a group of Pittsburgh teenagers who made a demo tape of "Since I Don't Have You" which was rejected by numerous labels. Calico was a local label just starting up. The record was released and was getting a lot of local attention when Dick Clark invited the group to appear on Bandstand -- the next week it entered the Billboar chart.
Brunswick had three top twenty records from Jackie Wilson in 1959, "Lonely Teardrops" being the most successful.
George Khoury was co-writer of Sea of Love and released the song through his label in Louisiana. Khoury records had been successful in producing cajun music, but Sea of Love became a #2 pop hit. When the demand for the record increased, he leased it to Mercury for distribution -- internationally it was produced as a Mercury recording.
While most of Mercury's success in 1959 was due to Brook Benton's recordings, the label's most dependable artists, The Platters, had the label's only #1 with "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes."
Cub Records began releasing records in 1958 and struck gold with The Impalas' "Sorry (I Ran All the Way Home);" not so much with groups like The Impressors, The Chesterfields and The Wanderers.
Coed records released "Beside You" in late 1958, but influential disk jockeys Alan Freed and Dick Clark preferred the "B" side, "Sixteen Candles." They played it and it became a #2 hit for Coed.
