For the first half of 1958 Billboard published four charts for popular music:
"Best Seller In Stores"
"Most Played By Jockeys"
"Most Played In Juke Boxes"
"Top 100 Singles."
Most researchers use the "Best Seller" chart, but that chart fails to differentiate between an "A" side and a "B" side of a double sided hit (when a record is sold, both sides get credit). So for that reason, the "Top 100 Singles" chart is the source for this Top Twenty. On the slides for each song, its highest position on any chart is identified. Beginning in August, Billboard combined the data from these charts and began publishing the "Hot 100." From August, 1958 on, that is the chart used for the "Top Twenty" and for the "highest ranking" on the slides.
