"It's nice for a kid who's meant so much for our program to get an individual thing like that. That is a record that is awful hard to get. This was a game when he could get it and get out and not embarrass the opponent." -- Coach Anderson

"Glock was just tremendous. The whole team is just excellent. Their depth is what makes them so tough. They go to a sub and they don't lose anything. I'd like to have just four or five of their bench guys." -- Schuyler coach, Steve Peterson

The Journey

the big circle

There was one game that did provide some excitement. The Warriors headed into the final weekend of the ‘89-’90 season 18 - 0 and, Schuyler brought a 7 - 9 record to Wahoo on Friday night. There was a degree of apprehension -- the home Warriors would be without their dominating center, Randy Hoffman, as he was sidelined with an ankle injury. In addition, backup Scott Latham was also nursing a sore ankle. The visiting Warriors had 6’5” sophomore Jeremy Kildare to bring in off the bench, but their starting lineup wouldn’t have anybody taller than 6’2”. Coach Anderson decided to play Jason Glock exclusively inside, rather than moving him around as Wahoo had been doing (with great success). It was somewhat unsettling to be making the change. As Anderson expressed it, “any time you have a starting lineup shakeup this late in the year, you just don’t know what’s going to happen.” What happened was pretty sensational.

As was the usual pattern for the 1990 team, Wahoo established an early lead, 24 - 13 at the end of the first quarter. Glock had 16 of the 24 points on five fieldgoals and six of six from the line. The Warriors continued feeding the ball inside in the second quarter and Glock added 13 to his total. Trent Toline came off the bench to chip in 7 in the second and Wahoo had a 50 - 31 lead. The onslaught continued in the third quarter as Glock poured in six more fieldgoals. Early in the fourth quarter, Glock connected for his 50th point. With a sub awaiting at the scorers’ bench, Glock scored again on a layup off a steal to push the total to 52. When Jason Glock left the game at the 5:18 mark in the 4th quarter he had set a new scoring record for Wahoo High School. The previous record of 48 had been held by Tim Shanahan in 1977, also against Schuyler. Glock commented, “My teammates kept feeding me the ball and I put it in. All of them were within five feet of the basket. We’re expected to make every shot from that range.” Glock finished the game 19 - 22 from the field and 14 - 17 from the line.

For anybody circling games on the schedule that were probable challenges to the Warriors of 1990, the Schuyler game had probably not been circled. The outcome of the game confirms that. With the regular season ended, the circled games had been erased. No team had presented a significant challenge to the 1990 Warriors. But now there would be one game permanently circled in the Wahoo record book: Schuyler, February 16, 1990. Jason Glock’s 52 points, as of this writing (2009), still stands as the school’s best.

Coach Anderson acknowledged the significance of Glock’s performance: “Jason has been so instrumental in our program and its success the last couple seasons that I though this was a good occasion for him to get a record. We knew he was close, so we kept him in there.” But Anderson was also quick to point out that “we don’t want our kids worried about individual stats.” After the Warriors closed out the regular season the next night against North Bend, the journey was complete. The Warriors sported a 20-0 record, a second undefeated season, a #1 Class B ranking, a #3 ranking in the Omaha World Herald Top Ten, and a 58 game win streak. All of these would probably be labeled “nice accomplishments.” The District Tournament was next and time would tell if Wahoo would achieve their stated goal, “to improve throughout the season and then get back to Lincoln to defend our crown.”
Jason Glock's scoring record made headlines and also earned him the "Prep Athlete of the Week" award.
