On Saturday, February 24, 1990 the Wahoo Warriors prepared to host the Ashland Bluejays in the first round of the B2 District Tournament. The Warriors were focused and ready to play this game, even though they had easily defeated the Bluejays, winners of only two games on the season, three weeks earlier. However, the “one at a time” approach did not preclude preparing for the future. A disadvantage of the home site format for the first round games was that it kept coaches from seeing the other District games. But one of the benefits Coach Mick Anderson realized from the success of his program was the willingness of others to help. In this, his third championship season, the head coach had been able to put together a scouting crew, headed by assistant coach Guy Dunning. That crew, three teams of two, fanned out on that Saturday night to scout the other first round District games. It wouldn’t be the first time these teams had been scouted, but it would be the most recent. The Wahoo players weren’t allowed to assume they would win the game, but they were confident, and the coaches were confident enough to want to be able to plan for the next opponent -- they would be ready for the next game, with no surprises.
There were no surprises on the Wahoo High School court that night. In the earlier contest with Ashland, the Warriors had scored 35 first quarter points -- the most they would score in any initial stanza. The intensity for the District game fell short of that effort, but not by much. Wahoo outscored the Bluejays 32 - 11 in the opening quarter -- the second most first quarter points for the year. With devastating full court pressure and a scoring barrage from Jason Glock, the Warriors quickly eliminated any hope the visitors might have had for a big upset. Glock scored continually from short range and offensive putbacks and then stepped to the outside to add two three pointers to bring his first quarter total to 21 points. The assault continued into the second period. Randy Hoffman, playing for the first time in two weeks due to an ankle injury, came off the bench to score 6 points in the first half (8 for the game). Scott Latham also contributed off the bench with 5 in the second and 8 for the game, along with 4 blocked shots. Bernie Inbody netted two threes. By the end of the quarter, all twelve Wahoo players had seen the court and Wahoo had built a 60 - 20 lead. By half way through the third quarter, the bench had again been cleared and the lead stood at 85 - 31. Only five players saw action in the fourth for Wahoo -- the “bottom five.” The Warriors still extended the lead. Trent Toline scored 8 of his 10 in the quarter while Justin Anderson and Joel Weyand each contributed 6, and Jeff Simons scored a three. With District rules restricting the roster to twelve players, there was no more bench to play. Ashland’s coach, Bill Paar, expressed the reality, “There’s just that much difference in the talent of their players and ours.”
The outcome of the Ashland game had been no surprise, but when the scouting corps reported back to Wahoo later that night, there was a big surprise. The other top seeds in the district had lost. Plattsmouth had defeated Gretna and Platteview had defeated Raymond Central. Waverly was able to prevail over Omaha Flanagan and would be the Warriors' next opponent. But, should they reach the finals, Wahoo would be playing an unfamiliar foe -- neither Platteview nor Plattsmouth had ranked high on the Warrior scouting chart, but at least they had reports from that Saturday’s games. They would be ready. They had cleared the first hurdle. As Coach Anderson expressed it, “It ‘s a game we expected to win. Now it’s going to be tougher each night out. The kids know that. They’ve been there before.” For the Wahoo fans, things were going as expected. The Wahoo coaching staff began preparing for Monday’s semifinals -- they wanted no more surprises coming out of the B2 District.
