Having won their first round game over fellow Capitol Conference member, Ashland, with their usual proficiency, the 1990 Warriors left the friendly confines of Wahoo High School to journey to Bellevue West High School to face more of a legitimate threat in the District B2 semifinal. The Waverly Vikings were members of the Eastern Midlands Conference and many viewed their 10 - 9 record as superior to many of Wahoo’s season opponents. Waverly and Wahoo had both been members of the Capitol Conference until the conference split in the late 1970’s with the smaller schools forming the new Capitol Conference while the larger schools joined with schools such as Plattesmouth and Nebraska City to form the Eastern Midlands. If you looked strictly at enrollment, the Eastern Midlands would surely rank as a bigger conference. The Vikings had lost to some quality teams -- twice to ranked Lincoln Pius X, and twice to ranked Nebraska City. So, when the coaching staff expressed that this might be one of Wahoo’s toughest games, they weren’t just blowing smoke.
Waverly proved the coaching staff right. They did something no other team had done, they outscored the Warriors .... in the second half. But that four points wasn’t enough to erase the 24 point lead the defending champions had built in the first half. The opening moments of the game might have given the Warrior camp a little pause as the Vikings actually led 5 - 3. But the game belonged to the Wahoo inside game, and especially to Jason Glock who’s 42 points might have gained more notice except it was still ten points short of his record 52 from the previous week. Randy Hoffman contributed 16 to add to the inside pounding by the Warriors. Coach Anderson commented, “They (Waverly) just didn’t have the muscle inside to stop both Jason and Randy.” Ryan Eddie contributed to the first half onslaught, connecting on three long balls and scoring all 11 of his points in the first half. Senior substitute Mike Dvorak had one of his best games as a Warrior, scoring six in each half.
But the Vikings never gave up. With a couple of three pointers and 7 of 9 freethrows, Waverly cut into the Wahoo lead, narrowing the gap to 17 late in the third quarter. But Hoffman and Dvorak both connected before the third quarter buzzer and the lead was 21 points. Wahoo then coasted to a twenty point victory, 87 - 67. But Waverly coach, Mark Cordes, was proud of his team’s effort, stating that they “played with a lot of heart,” and “gave a good effort until the end.” And Coach Anderson wasn’t totally pleased, calling the Wahoo play in the second half “rag-tag.”
Such was the mind set of the Wahoo basketball community in the latter stages of the 1990 campaign. A twenty point victory in a district semifinal over an opponent that was well respected coming in, produced expressions of displeasure from the winning coach and pride from the loser. And the fans got the win as expected. Dissatisfaction aside, Coach Anderson was happy to be moving on: “At this time of year you take a win anyway that you can get it. The main thing is to win and keep advancing.”
