MEASURING UP

fear factor -- episodes 1 & 2

Wahoo faced one of its tougher opponents of the ‘91’-92 season when they took on Raymond Central in the Holiday Tournament championship game on December 28, 1991. But you wouldn’t have thought that when you looked at the final score -- Wahoo prevailed 71 - 55. And the game was out of reach for the Mustangs early as Wahoo sprinted to a 29 - 8 first quarter lead. The first quarter barrage included five three point goals and was led by Joel Weyand’s 10 points. Raymond Central had gotten Wahoo’s attention the night before when the Mustangs decisively downed then Class B second ranked Schuyler, 74 - 52. The Wahoo players were focused and ready to play as Coach Anderson observed, “Our kids saw the way Raymond Central handled Schuyler last night so we knew we were going to have to play well.” After the initial assault, Raymond Central was able to compete the second half which prompted Raymond Central Coach Dale Rasmussen to claim that “It took us over a half to get over the fear factor of playing Wahoo.”

Going into the ‘91-’92 season, Raymond Central was a team that stood out on the Wahoo schedule. Wahoo certainly had a history with the Mustangs as the two schools were close geographically and guaranteed annual competition as members of the Capitol Conference. Since Wahoo’s ascendence to the basketball elite in 1988, the Warriors had defeated Raymond Central six times by an average margin of 27 points. In 1989, Raymond Central had given the Warriors one of its toughest contests, falling to the Warriors by a mere five points, 53 - 58. Most recently, the Mustangs had played the Warriors in the Capitol Conference championship game in 1991 with the Warriors claiming an 82 - 50 decision. The 1992 Raymond Central team had experience, with five players who had started the previous year: seniors, 6’3” Shawn Kreifels, 6’0” John Kliment, 6’2” Tim McNeese, 6’3” Bryan Masek; and junior, 6’3” Chad Samuelson. Coach Anderson had tabbed Raymond Central as the team to beat in the Capitol Conference prior to the start of the season and the Mustangs were ranked #10 in the preseason poll.

Wahoo faced the Mustangs again for a regular season matchup on January 24th, 1992 with the Warriors this time traveling to Raymond Central. Even on their home court, it appeared the “fear factor” was once again having its effect as the Warriors built a second quarter lead of 33 - 16. But Wahoo center, Trent Toline went to the bench late in the first quarter with three fouls and Raymond Central eventually mounted a comeback. John Kliment hit a basket with seven seconds left in the half and Central only trailed by two. Coach Rasmussen felt his team was getting over the intimidation and could mount a second half challenge to Wahoo: “The way we came back shows they are still human.” But Wahoo squelched the Mustangs’ hopes early in the second half as the Warriors forced three quick turnovers at the start of the half. Two minutes into the quarter, the Warriors had put on a 13 -2 run. Mike Hancock stepped in to hit two three pointers and score 12 points in the third quarter as Wahoo built a 60 - 47 lead. Wahoo then coasted in for an 82 - 67 win and Coach Rasmussen was still looking for answers: “When you look at their starting five, you have to cover all five guys. You can’t concentrate on just one or the others will hurt you.” Raymond Central exited the contest with an 8 - 4 record, two of the losses coming from Wahoo.
